Who's whee in the last three? (??) | October 30, 2024

So, what happened is that we had a public holiday off, which pushed our grand content schedule back a week. This means - shockingly - that this edition of our fortnightly release wrap will actually include the last THREE weeks. It's wild and crazy - come along for the ride.

Kalani Artis - Sounds Like Home

Kalani Artis came through for a chat with us at Sonora Studios back in July (listen here). At the time, he was a Central Coast artist that we didn't know a whole lot about. What we learned very quickly though was just how motivated Kalani was not only to make good music, but to make a difference doing it. I mean, the guy literally quit his job and built a studio at his house; both for himself and for local kids wanting to create.

His latest release, Sounds Like Home embodies the Kalani Artis we've gotten to know perfectly. This track was created in partnership with the fantastic charity Musicians Making a Difference (MMAD) and Universal Music Australia for the 2024 MMAD day. Sounds Like Home is a gentle, powerful release focusing on the home so many young Aussies are missing, and the home offered to young people by MMAD.

If you wanna catch Kalani Artis live, head down to South End Social in Gosford at 9am this Saturday, November 2. Kalani will be performing as part of the massive Gossy Weekender festival. Make sure to follow Kalani and MMAD on insta, too.

Eluera - Like I Do

It's been a while between drinks, but Eluera is back with a new single, Like I do. After two years away from releasing, the Sydney artist has reminded us all that she is still absolutely capable of making compelling pop music.

The production in Like I do is of immediate note, with Eluera opting for a longing blend of guitar, keys and harmonies to beautifully detail the sea of red flags she waded through with a former partner. It's an evolution from the last music we heard from Eluera back in 2022, and we can't wait to hear what else is in store.

Eluera will be playing a Like I do launch show on November 14 at the Oxford Art Factory Gallery Bar, and on the Central Coast this Sunday as part of the Gossy Weekender and Never had So Much Fun events. Keep up to date with Eluera via her socials while you're at it.

Brandon Duff - Unforgettable

Central Coast musician and decidedly funny guy, Brandon Duff has graced us with a new EP, Overrated. Brandon came in for a chat just last week to discuss his latest EP, his hilarious endeavours into the world of comedy and a whole bunch in between.

Unforgettable is the third cut from the four-track EP. It's a little faster than we're used to hearing from Brandon, and the heavier guitar and drum elements push the track a step further into band land. That's all without losing some of the pop elements that we've come to love. Duff even manages to slip in a reference to astrology and a car not starting into this one - Mercury is in gatorade, of course.

Listen to the Overrated EP anywhere you stream music and catch Brandon Duff live the Mangrove Mountain Memorial Club on December 4. You can also follow him here.

Ruby Archer - Pretty Thing

Ruby Archer has hit us with her second single of the year, Pretty Thing. Given the sophistication of this track - both in terms of its lyrics and composition - it's easy to forget that the artist behind it is only 19 years old.

True to form, Pretty Thing is playful, angry, political, jazzy and endlessly impressive. Ruby's trusty piano and see-sawing vocals guide us through the near on five-and-a-half minute epic, complimented by some fantastic jazz percussion. For your own sake, just click the link above and listen in full.

Ruby has been gigging in and around the Central Coast a fair bit this year, and you can catch her playing live at the aforementioned Gossy Weekender Festival this Friday, November 1. She'll be playing solo at Holidai Beauty at 5:30pm before joining her band, Ruby and the Groovy Doobies at Gosford Anglican Church from 7:15pm. Find those dates and more on her insta.

RONA., KYE - Burn It

Naarm producer RONA. has teamed up with fellow Melbournite and soul artist KYE for their latest release, Burn It. If you haven't heard of RONA. until now, consider this an invite to check out her incredible back catalogue of immersive, emotive electronic music.

Released a year to the day from Australia's voice to parliament referendum, Burn It is a thumping statement track aimed squarely at the institutions that continue to restrict and oppress First Nations people.

“It was a moment of clarity—our collective need to burn down systems that have never served us, that are suffocating our communities. It was a recognition that colonial systems haven’t been serving any of us. To heal, to reimagine, we need to create space for new shoots, for new journey lines,” RONA. said of the release.

RONA's next live dates are at Strawberry Fields and Laneway festivals, so rejoice if you've secured a ticket. The rest of us can follow RONA. here.
