February has been very, very good to us. Feast your eyes and ears on our picks for the second month of the rest of your life.
HAAi - Can't Stand To Lose
London-based Aussie producer HAAi has dropped her first new music since 2023, Can't Stand To Lose. This is a gripping return to releasing for HAAi, who says the track marks a "creative fork in the road" that will see more of her vocals featuring in releases.
"I've always considered myself a musician and a songwriter before anything else. I've loved re-awakening this side of myself, by exploring sounds far away from the dance floor and re-centring my vocals in my music", HAAi said in a statement accompanying the release.
If this is a taste of what's to come then you can expect some compelling new music from camp HAAi. In the meantime, enjoy the nostalgic video for Can't Stand To Lose above and keep up with HAAi's insta here.
Ally George - BEAT UP CAR
Don't be fooled by the all-caps title of Ally George's new song - the Darkinjung artist's first new music of 2025 is anything but shouty. BEAT UP CAR is a warm and bright exploration of the sometimes complex relationship Ally George has both with herself and her career.
[BEAT UP CAR is] about therapy—how much I hate talking about myself, and how I’m too shy to mention that I’m a musician. However, it’s also about how much my Mum believes in me, especially through times when I necessarily don’t myself", Ally told Homebrewed Media.
Now, we are reliably informed that there is more new music from Ally George on the way. If you like what you're hearing, jump on her insta to keep across the new developments.
Skeleten - Raw
Eora solo artist Skeleten has gifted us his second album, Mentalized. The advice with this one is, of course, to listen to the project in full - it is another supremely impressive body of work from Skeleten.
We'll zero in on track no.6 for this piece, however. Raw is an ambient and mellow dive into the heart of Mentalized. Raw builds gently and slowly, highlighting Skeleten's wizard-level ability to meld his vocals with a totally unique production style and traditional instrumentation. No one is making music like Skeleten right now.
There's no word on a tour off the back of Mentalized just yet, but it'd be a pretty safe bet to say there's something on the horizon. Keep up with Skeleten's socials for updates and announcements.
Joel leggett - Should've Known Better
We had Joel Leggett on the pod last year as he prepared to release his third album, Don't Wait. In that chat, Joel told us of his freshly assembled band, and his desire to fill out his sound a little more. Well, he has done just that with his latest drop, Should've Known Better.
Should've Known Better is a very fun foray into the world of jangly indie for the Central Coast artist, and we are absolutely here for it. The track represents something of a departure from the sound we heard from Joel Leggett on Don't Wait, showing us just effortlessly he can shift sonic lanes.
Along with this release, Joel Leggett also announced that he has a whole damn album headed our way later in the year. A busy man indeed. Keep up with it all via his socials.
Bootleg Rascal - From the Very Start
Yugambeh/Gold Coast band Bootleg Rascall have kicked off their year of releasing with a genre-bending barrel of fun, From the Very Start. This one draws on RnB vocals, 80's synth and fuzzy guitar to reflect on the various first steps we take through life.
Guitarist Jimmy Young shared as much with the release, "As the title and lyrics allude to, this song is all about beginnings - exploring the origins of romantic relationships, musical collaborations, friendships, and careers."
From the Very Start is a groovy, gleeful listen. Adding to the joy, the two-piece have recently announced their own mini-festival 'BOOTY BLOCK PARTY', which will be held over March and April. Grab all the details for that one and their upcoming tour dates via their website.
